Lately, I've been drawn towards animal graphics on t-shirts and sweatshirts. I recently ordered a wolf graphic t-shirt and absolutely love it, so much so that I'm thinking of adding a second wolf shirt to my wardrobe. But my latest animal obsession are horses. Horses, horses, horses.
My favorite Janet Jackson album to date featuring the J Dilla produced, Q-Tip featured and Joni Mitchell sampled, Got til it's Gone as well as my one of my favorite 90s R&B song, Go Deep. The video for that song always ignites my cravings for popcorn. Talking about music videos, Together Again encompassed the beauty of Africa in a non-offensive way and an overall wonderful tribute song. Although the lyrics of the song are both sad and encouraging, the music appropriately highlights the celebratory title of the song. Usually, 'happy-go-lucky' sounding songs like this aren't exactly my cup of tea (I don't even like tea), but the message and theme of Together Again is one that I sympathize with and support. Other tracks I love from the album are, Every Time and I Get Lonely. Her album cover, amongst many other things, has inspired me to let my hair grow naturally. I hate getting it permed anyways.
Although my musical taste has drastically changed over the last few years, I can't deny that I onced loved this album and actually still do.
Finally found a lovely pair of creepers at a price I can afford. They're white with black detailing and 1 1/2 inch black ribbed soles. Not my first choice, I'd have preferred the black and leopard print version, but I'm excited nonetheless.
P.S. Aren't you a little tired of seeing the same people idolized all over these so-called fashion blogs? Definitely not into reading them anymore. So post the link to your blog, I'm curious to see.
I love the site fmylife.com but never thought that I'd be contributing to it, well at least not any time soon. But oh how the mighty have fallen! Today, I had a 6 page paper due in literature class today. The paper was written but I just had to add some finishing touches before I handed it in. I decided not to take my laptop with me to work on it at school because I thought that I might get distracted by the features on my computer. As I was putting the final touches on the paper, which was already late, since I was not in the main computer room I was told that a class would be coming to use the room that I was in to write a test. Although I was highly irritated, I decided that I'd save the document and email it to myself to work on whilst in the main computer lab. HA! Well that didn't work out. For some reason, the document didn't save and stupidly, the computers at my uni don't have a recycle bin or any way to retrieve lost papers. I had saved the document as I writing it all along but strangely enough, the computer had no recollection of that. Then, I did something I don't usually do, especially not in public - I burst into tears. Not only was I feeling sick and shitty, broke and tired, my paper was late and gone! I know this kind of thing happens to just about all of us, but I can't but think that I'm living Murphy's Law.
Woke up this morning with the strangest feeling and the aftertaste in my head of a dream involving a young Bruce Springsteen. This ultimately lead me to the conclusion that I like my men a little scruffy and with facial hair as it appears to give them a face more character, in my opinion. And who doesn't love a face with character? Oh, I know I do. But don't ask me for the details of my Bruce-dream, I'll leave that up to your imagination. Anyhow, this feeling was replaced with a sudden hunger, and as I opened up to get the ingredients for my personalized tuna salad, I noticed that my red kidney beans had gone bad whilst I was away for spring break. What a rotten smell! Letting food go bad is something that I try very hard to avoid, especially when I'm dead broke. Thankfully, I was still able to enjoy my yummy home-made salad. As quickly as it went away, that ugly feeling came back when I realized that I had an essay that had to be edited and re-written into the final draft, about the parallels between Mary Shelley's creature in "Frankenstein", and the character of Perry Smith in Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood". It really isn't as difficult as it may sound, I'm just so terribly lazy and have been experiencing a slight case of writer's block recently. Life currently lacks inspiration, I hate my hair, my clothes don't fit right, the holidays are too far away and I want a bunny rabbit and a ukulele to keep me company. Is that too much to ask for? Apparently so.
I'm seeing Morrissey in a few hours. Thank you so much Lindsay.
As usual I ended up not going anywhere exciting or doing anything fun during spring break, so I decided to make use of my spare time and treat myself to a little recession-friendly retail therapy. I'm not one to spend truck loads of money on clothing so to have to cut back on my already measly budget seemed at first and at the least, a difficult task to carry out.
That being said, I made my way to my frequent retail spots, shopping list and budget in hand. Even though the wallet was half-empty, the glass was half full - and hopefully the shopping bag would be to.
Luckily, my optimistic outlook did pay off (literally) as my little shopping adventure bore some absolutely lovely fruits. I conveniently found a pair of acid wash jeans for $9.99 at Urban Outfitters, to replace the pair that I had torn last summer, a pair of black tassle loafers, some light summer tanks at Forever 21 and a maxi dress from H&M, amongst other things. But oi vey! Finding this beloved maxi dress was a complete nightmare. I visited three different H&M stores and only on my fourth visit did I reap the rewards of my long-lasting journey. The first two stores only had 2 or 3 sizes left, none of them in my size, and the third store was completely sold out. Luckily, the fourth store had the last of my size and I went straight to the counter with it, skipping out on my usual changing room session. Fortunately, it fits wonderfully and doesn't make me look short or pregnant as I'd initially feared. But I can't help but think that half of the women in NYC will be wearing this particular dress during the spring/summer season, based on the scarcity of it. Oh but it's a risk I'm willing to take.
Thankfully, my luck didn't end there. Upon my return to the city at the end of the break, I was greeted with some lovely packages that contained a leopard print cocktail hat with a netted veil (I got sent two of these for some reason), a pair of Jeffrey Campbell oxfords that arrived courtesy of my sister for my birthday last week Sunday (THANKYOU!) and my beloved and long-awaited wolf t-shirt.
I am in complete hysterics after reading this article and watching the clip below. You HAVE to read the article, or at least be familiar with the story, to underestand the clip below. I feel sorry for "theconnor" aka "Cisco Fatty" for being another individual participating in the internet-spreading of his humiliation, but seriously, what were you thinking?! This is a brilliant deterrence for me to not get a Twitter account or blab all over my facebook status.
Topshop has a blog. I'm impatiently counting down the days 'til their New York City store opens up. I miss the days when I used to shop at Topshop whilst at school in England. Infact, I missed Topshop so much that when I left England, I'd make wishlists on the site and send them to my mother as a hint when she'd travel to the UK. Haha. Confessions, confessions. Until April 2nd comes around, here's a mini-wishlist that I will not be sending to my dearest mother.
I've been wanting to purchase these Roisin Murphy shirts that feature the designs of the man responsible for the exquisite and original artwork on Roisin Murphy's first solo album Ruby Blue. These pictures are the result of his collaboration with clothing company Lone Costume and I am in lust! If you need any more credentials about Mr Henwood, if you've seen Kanye West's video Love Lockdown, he's responsible for that as well as the Sow Into You and If We're in Love music video's for Roisin Murphy. Oh, and did I mention that he's dating the lovely Roisin? Lucky guy. If you know where I can get my hands on one of these babies, do let me know. I've searched high and low all over the web but with no luck.
Been listening to Rumours by Fleetwood Mac a lot lately. How amazing is the bass/guitar solo in The Chain? Second Hand News and Go Your Own Way both have such an exciting feel to them, and God Bless Christine McVie for writing Songbird. I don't think there's a better song to end an album with than Gold Dust Woman. OK, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration but listening to the album just makes me feel that way. And of course, who can forget Stevie's sultry voice in Dreams? Even though we've all heard Don't Stop played in a dozen or more adverts, and even used for Bill Clinton's presidency campaign, it's still as uplifting as ever.
(Fleetwood Mac in the '70s)
Fleetwood Mac are currently on their North American tour, but I had no luck at all with getting tickets for their Madison Square Garden show this past Thursday. Thankfully, there are live videos from youtube to keep me company until they decide to go on tour again.
I'm really not big on celebrity gossip and can't stand seeing those type of magazines any- and everywhere. But whilst cruising through stereogum on the hunt for some new music, a headline caught my eye that filled me with both curiosity and confusion. Rarely does one see Miley Cyrus and Radiohead both featured in the same sentence. Let me warn you now that my stance on this story is probably very biased based on the fact that I've been a Radiohead fan for years and have never taken a liking to any music that Miley Cyrus has put out. Why? Well, forgive me for not being able to relate to her tweeny-bopper lyrics and the fact that I think that the level of craziness and hype surrounding this young girl is rather unhealthy. Now I don't want to go too in-depth into the reasons why I believe that the level of fame and influence she's experiencing creeps me out some, this isn't a Miley bashing session. However, yes I know that she's teenager, but after listening to this clip of a radio interview where she claims to want to "ruin" Radiohead, I can't help but think that the girl may have some ego problems.
Concerning Miley Cyrus as a celebrity, this was a really unprofessional move. Yes, I know how young she is as I've stated before, but she should also know that if she can't handle the professionalism required to handle such situations, and some of the 'hardships' (rejection) of fame, then maybe she just ain't ready for it. For most fans, meeting their idols is their biggest dream but I can't help but think that maybe for some fans/celebrities, it should stay that way. I'm a Radiohead fan but I don't think there'd be any real glory in meeting them personally. I mean, it's not as if they're made of gold and who says we'd get along anyways? If I did get to meet them however, I'd consider that to be a perk. The true fan-artist satisfaction, I believe, is in their music. That's what they do, make music. They're musicians. So seeing them live would be my ultimate fan-dream. I really don't understand why fans think musicians owe it to them to sit down and have tea with them, or take a gazillion photo's with them. I know for a fact that if I were a musician that reached the height that Radiohead has managed to meet, there are a lot of people I wouldn't be interested in meeting, both celebrities and non-celebrities alike. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that Radiohead is not obliged to meet anyone. Tours aren't designed for one-on-one meetings. It's about the MUSIC. See it, hear it, enjoy it and go home. They owe you nothing more than their music.
This also brings me to the idea of being a non-professional paparazzi, as if it's a real profession, haha. But really, I don't understand why some people feel the need to attack a celebrity, when their in a public place, for an autograph or a picture. Instances when celebrities are with their families or out to lunch, or doing something personal, don't require you butting in. Living in NYC, one does see their fair share of famous people. But I'll be honest and say that except for one, Billy Conelly, I have nothing to show for the celebrities I've seen. I won't lie and say I never get starstruck, au contraire mon frere. But taking out my camera and flashing away is just something I can't bring myself to do.
Been listening to these lovely Swedish ladies since the latter part of last year and have been meaning to do a mini-post on them so here it is, or rather, here they are. Those Dancing Days.
I'm a big fan of girl groups so when I came across these laid-back looking and spunky-sounding lasses, it was love at first 'hear'. Their energetic indie sound fueled by soulful vocals is a perfect marriage and just screams 'fun' and 'youth' - two elements that are definitive concepts in my life. These girls are definitely going to be part of my spring-summer soundtrack.
Natasha Khan is officially one of my favorite lyricists. Her delicate and witty use of words and the images she paints with them are so intricate, that they bring out the magnificent details of the so-called simple things in life. She makes the act of falling in and out love into an art and doesn't wrap up her words and meanings in pretty, little red boxes with satin bows. She rather unwraps them with raw and intense emotions, leaving the listener both curious and satisfied at the same time.
Her sophomore album, Two Suns, comes out on April 6th.
May 2nd seems so far away. Oh Natasha, I cannot wait to see and hear you in the flesh.
